Somerset County Education Association
Welcome to The SCEA
As we roll along into autumn, the focus has moved past the first day of
school, hurricanes, earthquakes, and ground shaking pension and benefits
“reforms” to managing larger classes, dealing with greater paycheck
deductions and complying with more state mandated regulations.  Our
profession becomes more stressed every year, but the positives keep
emerging.  As a group, we have united behind our dedication, rallied for
progress, and continue to bring our best selves to our students every day.

Over the summer, the SCEA sent 30 representatives to the NEA
Representative Assembly in Chicago, where we got to debate and endorse
the National Association’s policy on tenure and evaluation.  There were
animated discussions on political choices which can drastically affect our
profession and students. Many of us hopped on busses for the Save Our
Schools (SOS) rally in Washington D.C. It was a wonderful experience to
join with those who came from Wisconsin, Ohio, Texas, and other states
that are also fighting for their right to organize. In August, we attended NJEA’
s Summer Leadership Conference.

Most exciting is our involvement with the campaign to elect Flemington
teacher Marie Corfield to a seat in the NJ Assembly. You will be hearing
from us to help elect candidates who will not be Christie puppets in the
legislature. You all are invited to a free October fest on October 1 to
support Marie’s campaign. See the website for information.

Finally, look for our members who will be on the Brian Williams Education
Nation on Sunday, September 25. We will be proud to represent the Central
NJ contingency as NBC debates the future of education in our nation.  It will
be an exciting year.  I hope you will join some of our events.
